Project: Scale Drawing
One of the most genuine applications of Algebra in everyday life is the use of scale and ratio to create blueprints, scale models, and scale drawings. For your first major project of the year, you will have the opportunity to create your own scale deawing.
Materials:
• Pencil • Eraser • Color pencils • Black stiencil or sharpie (optional) • Poster paper: 18 X 24 or larger • A picture that you would like to expand to scale
Directions:
• Create a picture on graph paper. Unless you feel really confident in your ability to draw, make sure the picture is not TOO SMALL or has TOO many small details (it will make it VERY difficult to draw otherwise) • Take the picture, and measure out the perimeter. Afterwards, pick a scale in centimeters to expand the drawing to any ratio you choose EX: 2:1 3:1 4:1, etc. Please indicate the scale clearly on your final drawing. • Take a piece of string, measure it out. Then cut it. You will use this to measure out the curves of the drawing. That or use a flexible/architectual ruler, a compass, or a protractor. • Take a square on your original drawing, and reproduce it on your posterboard. If there are any major curves on the drawing, make sure you use your string and measure out the length of each. • Continue to do this until you end up with a final scale drawing. Please color your drawing as you see fit.
Your drawing must feature the following: Proper scale: All features on poster are drawn to scale and the scale used is clearly indicated (example: 1 cm = 3cm) on the poster. Neatness of Color or Lines: and Lines All straight lines are ruler-drawn, all errors have been neatly corrected and all features are colored completely. Attractiveness: Is it visually appealing? Worksheet: Will give to you tomorrow in class. Must be done to get full credit. Grid, Curve, and Picture used.
Final Draft: Due Monday November 23rd.
