5th Grade Requirements and Expectations

Classroom Rules:

1.  Listen carefully.

Consequences for Misbehaving: 

1.  Warning.

2.  Recess clean-up duty.

3.  Classroom recess.

4.  Note home.  (Teacher/parent conference may be required.)

Purpose

The objective for having 5th Grade Requirements is to position students for academic success on the CSTs and in 6th grade and beyond. In order to graduate, all 5th graders must complete the requirements for math, language arts, science and social studies.

 

Implementation

All 5th grade students will be required to maintain a student portfolio including the following:

  • Math; Complete all activities in California Math student book
  • Language arts:
    • Reading: complete 75% of OCR workbooks – Spelling and Vocabulary, Comprehension and Language Arts, and complete 25 AR quizzes on 25 chapter books (on AR Reading level).
    • Book Report: Read 10 chapter books (on AR Reading level) and complete a book report on 10 of them. Students must keep a log of books read, complete a title page, story map and chain of events. Suggestion: two books per month.
    • Vocabulary: keep a log of selection vocabulary story titles and write vocabulary word sentences for each word.
    • Greek Roots: write sentences using each word and complete a word tree.
  • Science: complete a science project/research indicating the problem, hypothesis, materials, procedure, related literature, results, conclusion and bibliography. Display project during Science Fair.
  • Social Studies: Report on 50 states and their capitals. Choose 1 state to research in depth.
  • College Report on one (1) of the top 100 schools in the United States of America.

 

Differentiation Plan: Students are required to read chapter books at their Reading level and complete quizzes on 10 chapter books.

 

Behavior Expectations: All 5th grade students will stay on-task and follow all classroom and schoolwide rules and teacher directions. Teachers will provide reports to parents of students who experience difficulty handling behavior expectations for 5th grade. Students who get 2 or more suspensions will not be allowed to participate in 5th grade activities.

 

Teachers will inform parents of 5th grade requirements at the Meet Your New Teacher day in August. At that time, all grade level expectations will be explained to parents. Furthermore, parents will be provided an update about student progress in October, December and February.

 

Evaluation

  • Data meetings in October, December and April to assess progress toward academic goals and 5th grade requirements.
  • Weekly assessments, Mock tests, CST scores for ELA,  Math and Science and AR Reports
  • Update about student progress in October, December and February.
