5th Grade Requirements

Purpose
The objective for having 5th Grade Requirements is to position students for academic success on the CST and in 6th grade and beyond. In order to graduate, all 5th graders must complete the requirements for math, language arts, science and social studies.

Implementation
All 5th grade students will be required to maintain a student portfolio including the following:
•    Math; Complete all activities in Envision Math student book.
•    Language arts:
o    Reading: complete 75% of California Treasures workbooks – spelling through curriculum and vocabulary, comprehension and language arts.
o    Book Report: Read 10 chapter books and complete a book report on 8 of them. Students must keep a log of books read, complete a title page, story map and chain of events. Suggestion: one book per month (September- April).
o    Vocabulary: keep a log of selection vocabulary and write vocabulary word sentences for each word. Supplemental vocabulary based on CST vocabulary needs.
o    Greek Roots: write sentences using each word and complete a word tree.
•    Science: 1 group project and 2 individual (one of the individual projects is for the Annual Science Fair). Complete a science project/research indicating the problem, hypothesis, materials, procedure, related literature, results, conclusion and bibliography.
•    Social Studies: Report on 50 states and their capitals. Choose 1 state to research in depth. (2 shared projects and 1 individual)
•    College Report on one (1)  higher education institution of student’s choice.

Behavior Expectations: All 5th grade students will stay on-task and follow all classroom and school rules. Teachers will provide reports to parents of students who experience difficulty handling behavior expectations for 5th grade. Students who get 2 or more suspensions will not be allowed to participate in 5th grade activities.

Teachers will inform parents of 5th grade requirements during the first week of school. At that time, all grade level expectations will be explained to parents. Furthermore, parents will be provided an update about student progress at progress reporting time or sooner if needed.

Evaluation
•    Data meetings will be conducted between fifth grade teachers to assess progress toward academic goals and 5th grade requirements.
•    Weekly assessments, Mock tests, CST scores for ELA, Math  and Science.
•    Update about student progress will be done monthly.
